How to get started with medium writing?
Medium writer growth advice.
How do you write from scratch? How do beginners start practicing writing? How do ordinary people start writing?
Many readers want to start writing, but don’t know how, so today I’m going to write a simple guide for beginners on how to get started.
However, novice writing from scratch, without a good attitude and long-term planning, it is easy to give up halfway. Newcomers often encounter many problems when writing:
1. Deliberately pursue rhetoric, literary style, and the article has no connotation.
2. Eager for success and have too high expectations for writing.
3. The content written is not read, and the reading volume is low.
4. The writing is stuck, and the writing can’t go on.
5. Can’t write, there is nothing to write.
In fact, writing life is divided into sections. Since you are a novice, you should do a good job in the novice stage, adjust your mentality, and plan your long-term writing career.
1. Membership
If you want to make money writing in medium, becoming a member is the best option, although they don’t require it. I wrote an article specifically about the relationship between membership and income.
2. Identify Your Writing Field
Think about what your interests are and what you are good at. Also think about whether the content you are good at is easy to write into many articles, not all hobbies are suitable for writing as articles.
When we write in medium, we must learn to analyze the needs of readers, satisfy readers’ inner desires, and know readers’ pain points and concerns.
Identify the writing direction that you are good at and like, such as knowledge popularization, experience sharing, hot comments, novels, stories, etc. You need to choose a direction for long-term deep cultivation in order to accumulate.
3. Choose the right tag
In medium writing, you can add 5 appropriate tags to each story. When you enter a tag, there will be the number of articles already under this tag, which is a good reference.
Choose about 10 popular tags (more than 30K stories), if the number is too small, your articles will not have enough reach, and if the number is too large, your content will not be focused enough. If you are ambitious, you can choose those tags have stories over 100k, or even over 300k.
Why choose 10 instead of exactly 5, because we’re going to write the same type of story, not the same story. The subject matter is too narrow, and It will result in you not having enough content to write.. Just pick 5 of your tags each time when you publish.
How to find these tags?
You search for a word in medium, and on the right you will see some “Related Topics”, which are the tags you are looking for. Click on them to see.

4. Don’t start with fiction
I advise new writers not to start with novels, because that is very difficult. You can start by telling a story that happened to you, and you can tell some things you saw and express your opinion about them. These essays were practiced together in middle school, and you’ll get started easily.
5. Don’t care about the number of followers
Don’t worry about the number of followers in the beginning, write a lot first. It doesn’t matter if you don’t join a partner, when you become a partner you can edit previously published articles and turn them into a revenue model.
6. Writing skills learning
You need to keep learning writing skills, and if you just keep writing and the quality of the story doesn’t improve, it’s not going to make a lot of money. 7. Don’t think too much, start writing now
Don’t put too much psychological burden on yourself before writing.
Don’t think too much. First set a small goal, step by step. Start with a your own story or a point of view. start with a 300-word article, and then slowly increase the number of words.
Write as you speak, express what you want to write to your friends. Begin by writing a paragraph that treats you as if you were chatting with a friend. Carefully observe the people and things around you, and express your opinions more.
Don’t be afraid of bad writing, take your time, everything will get better, and after the novice stage, the road ahead will get better and better.
