Mobile technology is presenting sweeping changes to major economic industries including banking and finance, especially in Europe. By 2020, about 50% of Visa transactions in Europe will go through via mobile and by that time smartphone is all Europeans need when commuting and shopping. This is also conducive to the booming Fintech and fertile ground for cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin business in Europe and Croatia specifically.

BITCOIN MARKET

Bitcoin Business in Croatia is aiming for competitive ground against mainstream payment methods. In Croatia there are two main portals dealing with cryptocurrencies news and Bitcoin. One of them is Hrvatski Bitcoin Portal at crobitcoin.com, initiated by students of the Faculty of Organization and Informatics at University of Zagreb. Another less active portal is “Bitcoin Magazin Hrvatska” at www.bitcoinmag.hr which offers relatively similar content.

When the first Bitcoin ATM was installed back in September 2014 in a catering facility in Zagreb, Bitcoin has since then gained increasing exposure in Croatia. Now the number of Bitcoin ATMs in Croatia has increased to three machines. Bitcoin is still in “grey area” to Croatians and still allowed for unofficial transactions and payments.

Customers in the Republic of Croatia are lucky enough to go through transactions between Croatian banks and exchange offices without intermediaries. This is quite close to the decentralized virtue of blockchain, which explains approximately 6,000 of Bitcoin full Nodes in Croatia. Such number is foreseen to increase in the future thanks to the booming technology and mobile ecosystem in the country.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

Croatia is endowed with strong infrastructure of mobile devices, Bitcoin nodes plus open mindset towards Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Such preconditions are getting ripe for blockchain and cryptocurrencies to gain stronger ground in Croatia and surrounding countries. Undoubtedly other adjacent blockchain applications in Fintech, lottery, gaming and the likes will flourish in the future.
