Spain vs Italy (Euro 2020)

The idea is to plot the emotional fluctuation of football fans on a straight-line graph. I agree that quantifying emotions is not feasible in its literal sense. Yet, it’s worthwhile to observe the emotional roller-coaster that the fans, of world’s most popular game, ride.

Timeline —

  1. In the Semi-finals, Italy scored the first goal in the 60th minute, giving the Spanish hearts a bit of agony.
  2. Spain retaliated in the 80th minute.
  3. Extra-time went mostly uneventful with some missed (and close) chances.
Event points represented by the dots symbolises a major event.

In penalties, spanish emotional maxima was seen when Italy missed their first penalty — (two events in their favor — goal and first penalty miss), which meant Spain was leading for the first time in the game.

But, their own player took the charge of spoiling the party. Spanish player Dani Almo, missed Spain’s opening penalty as well, bringing them down (emotionally and literally). From there on both teams would hit their penalties, until… the Morata curse hit back at Spain. (Apologies for the dramatic tone.)

Jorginho hits the final penalty for Italy to see them through to finals, establishing a never-ending grief for Spain. Euro Cup: Quarterfinals

Round 16: A tale of Comebacks!

June 28, was a treat for neutral audience. Both the Round-16 matches on the day ended up in a thriller. The France vs Switzerland game gave us the biggest upset of the tournament. While, Spain succeeded in evading a close scare against Croatia and finalized their place in quarterfinals to meet Switzerland.
