5 Highlights From OpenAI’s Report “How People Are Using ChatGPT”
On September 15th, OpenAI published “How People Are Using ChatGPT”, the largest study ever on consumer use of ChatGPT. The study was based on ChatGPT use from November 2022 (launch) through July 2025, when usage reached 18B messages/week by 700M users (~10% of the world’s adults).
This is a seminal piece of research given the massive pool of users in the study, the use a new taxonomy to report on the types of messages that users send, the insight into the diffusion of chatbot use across populations, and the growth of different types of usage within cohorts.
1 . Personal Use Is Growing Faster Than Use At Work
While most economic analysis of AI has focused on its impact on productivity at work, the impact of non-work usage is on a similar scale. The decrease in the share of work-related messages is largely due to changing usage by users rather than a change in the composition of new ChatGPT users.
2. 80% of All User Asks Are Related To Practical Guidance, Seeking Information, And Writing Assistance
Practical Guidance is the most common use of ChatGPT, including tutoring and teaching, how-to advice about a variety of topics, and creative ideation.
Writing is the 2nd most common use case, including emails, documents editing, critiquing, summarizing, and translating text provided. Writing dominates use at work, totaling 40% of work-related asks, highlighting chatbots’ ability to generate digital outputs vs. traditional search engines.
Seeking Information includes searching about people, current events, products, and recipes, and appears to be a close substitute for web search.
3. 49% Of User Messages Are Asking To Supporting Decision-Making
While supporting decision-making has the largest share of asks, it does not produce output directly. Doing, which accounts for 40% of asks, delivers output that can be plugged into a production process. Only 11% are asks are related to Expressing.
4. Over Time, Users Believe ChatGPT Responses Are Getting Better
Over the last 18 months, user satisfaction has increased ~20%.
Notably, satisfaction levels vary greatly between the different user interactions:
5. Woman Have Surpassed Men In Usage Of ChatGPT
While male users outnumbered female users by more than 4.5X in Jan. 2023, today, female users outnumber male users by ~10%.
This reflects that simple math that as use of ChatGPT grows, it increasingly reflects the glboal demographics. Which is why ChatGPT usage has grown especially fast over the last year in low- and middle-income countries.
