The Best Communities In The World, Including BTC, Share This One Trait

I’ve been thinking deeply about community for 20+ years. In my talk “10 Thoughts On Community”, I start by sharing my definition of community:

A community is an ecosystem where, when it works, everyone gets more out of it than they put in

Another of my core community beliefs is that:

Communities can scale highly correlated to value delta, which is the value difference between the cost to produce the good the community produces for community members, and what members value the good at.

That’s why the biggest communities in the world are the things with the biggest value deltas, and we have a collective word for those things. We call those things “religions”.

And the one trait I posit that great communities share, is the ability to provide something the community members can’t provide for themselves, or at least not comparably well.

I believe Alcoholics Anonymous is among the greatest decentralized communities ever. It’s grown so huge, because it provides sobriety to tens of millions of people. It costs little for the community to produce that sobriety, and the value to members of sobriety is immeasurable. And members struggle to be sober outside the community. The documentary about the Founder of AA, “BillW” is a masterclass on community building.

Another of my 10 thoughts is that:

At an atomic level, a community is two people. And we’ve all been in two person communities where 1+1=100.

The reason intimate relationships are so powerful, is because everyone is getting something of intense value, simply by giving something to the other person that costs us nothing to produce.

Bitcoin is also an insanely great community. There is nowhere else you can go to get the financial freedom and security that bitcoin provides. That alone is of immense value. But on top of that, it’s been the greatest appreciating asset the world has ever known. Such that, anyone who’s hodl’d for any period of time, has been overwhelmed by what bitcoin has provided. And I think we’re still early, even though some people think it’s late. They always have.

That’s why I’m as bullish on bitcoin today as Iv’e ever been. Because the community’s never been stronger.
