London Quantum Computing MeetUp — A Perspective

Some history and future opportunities for one of MeetUp’s most impressive Quantum Computing groups

The London Quantum Computing MeetUp (LQCM) is a fantastic group of over 2,700 quantum aficionados who have had 40+ events since their first in March 2017.

Entitled “­Quantum Computers — The world’s most incredible machines” the first meetup took place at CodeNode in Moorgate in partnership with the London Java Community, and saw Professor Winfried Hensinger of University of Sussex give a talk and answer questions. Only three and a half years ago this was still the point where Quantum Computing felt like distant science fiction.

The event was hosted by Steve Halsey who also created LQCM. As with so many such Meetups (including InsTech London which I co-founded) the creation was aimed at answering two questions:

What can this technology do?

and

Is there really a group of people who care?

Why was Steve asking these questions?

A personal interest in how technology can help the battle the climate crisis. It turns out that QC does have a role to play in sustainability, but of course many of the earlier members were more…
