Our first event in February saw a fantastic explanation of the interaction of different “quantum technologies” on the topic of protecting our data.

Bruno Huttner and Jean-Sébastien Pegon of ID Quantique spoke to Paolo and Emanuele explaining that Quantum Computing will bring the real threat of “straight forward” decryption of many encryption technologies that are highly effective in a pre-quantum world. At the same time however, they explained, there are a variety of quantum (and non-quantum related) ways to ensure our data can stay secure. There was a clear call to action — reflecting what we heard last year from Professor Michele Mosca — that this is a problem to consider and act on now, not later.

This was also a perfect link into the themes cover at the Lloyd’s Lab Quantum session on 11 February.

Q&A from the session

We’re really appreciative that Bruno gave written answers as well as spoken ones.

George: how do you know quantum key is good or not? Isn’t it probabilistic?

Answer [Bruno]: Indeed, we define a security parameter (you can find it in QKD literature as epsilon, which defines…
