If you’ve played the original Quantum Game with Photons, this will be fantastic news! And if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? It’s an in-browser puzzle with real-world quantum physics, where all the power lies in your hands: shoot lasers, trigger photon detectors, save the world.

This browser-based puzzle game brings intricate quantum physics phenomena straight to your computer screen — just jump right in!

Several months ago, Artur Ekert of the Center for Quantum Technologies in Singapore reached out to us with one request:

“All I want is the coolest quantum game in the known multiverse, please!”

So that’s what we’re making!

Version 2.0 will include all the coolest and greatest from the original Quantum Game, but better: two photons at a time, entanglement, quantum key distribution, and — of course — the multiverse. We’ll make the quantum simpler and easier to understand, but also go deeper into its complexity (pun intended), adapt it to mobile browsers, and allow you to share your own puzzles with the world. There will be no Star-Trek teleportation, no faster-than-light communication, only weird, real quantum physics. And the whole project will be open source and free to use even within other projects, games, or didactic materials.

Quantum Game doesn’t only have puzzles for you to solve — you can also learn about the phenomena you’re using and how they’re applied in practice.

We want to make this game fun to play, with learning as an unintended consequence (but we’ll happily take the credit for your future quantum physics PhD, thanks). You’ll be able to jump right into the real-world quantum physics, play around with incredible phenomena, and create your own experiments — all from the comfort of your own computer screen. Our game, just like other brilliant science-based games, will be actually playable, and fun!

But wait, who’s this “we” we keep talking about?
The new version of the Quantum Game is hosted by the Center for Quantum Technologies in Singapore, where five of us will be working for the next few months, to create the coolest game possible: Piotr Migdał (project leader, level designer), Philippe Cochin (lead programmer, idea maven), Chiara Decaroli (physicist, part-time physics–to–visuals translator), Klem Jankiewicz (lead graphics and UX designer), and Ivana Kurecic (narrative designer, PR manager). But we don’t want to do this alone!

We want to know what you want to see in Quantum Game v2.0 — tensor diagrams, the many-world interpretation, multiplayer features, quantum state visualizations, lots more explanations… Get in touch and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Medium, where we will be sharing our design process and all the bumps on the road. It’s time for quantum physics to get less spooky!
