Next in line for our ‘Meet the Team’ series is one of our Software Engineers who is nearing his one year mark since joining the QuarkWorks family!

Alexander Gompper

Software Engineer

When did you join QuarkWorks and what led you to take on this position?

I joined QuarkWorks in October of 2018, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself. Jacob Muchow reached out to me after the Mizzou career fair and said that my resume was ‘really interesting’. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever forget the verbiage that he used because it really excited me that someone else saw my personal projects as something cool.

At the time, I had been working part-time for three years in a local restaurant, so I totally jumped on the opportunity. So much of the career fair can become mundane whenever you’re walking booth-to-booth handing out resumes, so when someone reached out to me I got really excited about the proposition of working for the firm.

What excites and energizes you about the company?

I think the atmosphere that comes with working at a startup is phenomenal. It’s been a great balance of professionalism that is still surrounded by an energy of entrepreneurialism, which I’ve enjoyed for a long time. The work that you do at a startup has such a direct impact on the direction of the company that it forces a strong sense of importance upon you. I feel tightly knit amongst every one of my co-workers and I don’t feel like that’s something that you can achieve at most companies.

What has been your favorite project to work on or are currently working on?

Absolutely TryNow. When I first started, it was a little while before I was able to really sink my teeth into a project, but TryNow has been one of the coolest projects I’ve touched on. It’s the project that I’ve felt I’ve contributed the most to, and has made my code feel important and used. I think that at some large companies, individual’s code can get lost in ‘the void’ per se, or get drowned out by bureaucracy, whereas the architecture that I’ve worked on with TryNow has been critical to its success.

Advice you would give someone working at a startup?

Go into work every day with a goal in mind of what you want to accomplish. I’m still not very good at this, but I think it’s important to set daily, attainable goals whenever you go into work. It helps you feel successful whenever you leave knowing that you got done what you set out to do. On a broader note, I think it’s important to keep your personal career goals in mind at a startup, because sometimes the fast pace of the work doesn’t always give you the chance to reflect on your career path like that. The ultimate goal is to do great work for the company, and have those contributions work in favor of your personal targets simultaneously.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Anyone who knows me knows that I have an absolute obsession with collecting shoes. Purchasing rare and collectible footwear was actually the entire reason that I taught myself Python and NodeJS (to automate the process), two languages that I’ve used quite a bit during my time with QuarkWorks! E-commerce has always fascinated me, so buying shoes on the internet has been a cool way for me to combine tons of my interests. On the other hand, maybe I just enjoy shopping and the shoes are just an excuse.

If you could pick up on a skill in an instant, what would it be?

Lately, I’ve taken an interest in carpentry and woodworking. I think that I’ve always admired the self sufficiency that comes with being a good craftsman, but I personally don’t have the time, focus, or tools to become a good one. It takes years to accumulate enough experience to be considered proficient at carpentry and the like, and even longer to become truly masterful at it. I think that if I could learn those skills instantly, it would be an awesome gift.
