As part of our next series for ‘Meet the Team’ we would like to introduce to you one of the early co-founders of QuarkWorks!
What inspired you to start QuarkWorks?
I’ve had a bunch of different jobs over the years, enough to convince me that I’m not cut out for the traditional employment route. I met Bryan at a meetup, where we chatted about making apps (easy) and getting paid (hard). I’ve met a lot of people who talk about forming their own companies, but few who actually carry through. When I showed up at the original office, he had this table made of cardboard covered with random soldering equipment. I remember looking at it and thinking to myself, ‘this guy might just be crazy enough to succeed’. One thing led to another, and here we are!
What are your future plans for the company?
As a result of the Covid pandemic, we’ve had to make a bunch of adjustments to working remote full time. Along the way, we built a tool to improve our internal team communication. We’ve been working on spinning this out into a stand alone product for other companies. Stay tuned!
Advice you would give someone trying to get a company up and running?
It’s easy to imagine success, but you need to be prepared for failure, and lots of it. When I look back at our first few years, I can only laugh at some of the mistakes we made. But we kept on making adjustments until eventually we started doing more things right than wrong. After that, it’s just optimization.
If I could give any one piece of advice to my past self, it would be this: talk more! To customers, clients, anybody who will listen and give honest feedback. A cup of coffee and half an hour of somebody’s time is far, far cheaper than spending years going down the wrong path.
If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Honestly, anything that would give me more time with my friends and family. But seeing the rest of the galaxy would be cool as well!
