Get to know one of our Software Engineers who not only loves 3D printing in his free time but actually majored in Information Technology before becoming a full-time developer here at QuarkWorks.
When did you join QuarkWorks and what led you to take on this position?
I joined QuarkWorks in June 2019, after graduating in May with my degree in Information Technology. I started iOS development in my last year in college and fell in love with it, and found QuarkWorks online, and had even used some of the apps that they had developed! I talked to them at a career fair, and ended up applying and joining the team soon after that.
What excites and energizes you about the company?
One exciting thing for me is getting to go into work everyday to work on cutting edge technology, with passionate people who love getting to build cool stuff. I love the balance of professionalism, office environment, work culture, and getting to work with other incredibly bright people.
What has been your favorite project to work on or are currently working on?
I am currently working on Paceline, a fitness rewards app that incentivizes people who are active every week with different rewards like Starbucks. This has been my favorite project due to the technologies involved with it, like the Apple Watch! I’ve been a huge fan of my apple watch (It’s my favorite product from Apple) and getting to develop an app that uses it has been super cool!
Advice you would give someone working at a startup?
Be willing to jump into anything, especially outside of your comfort zone. For me, I started off doing iOS work for the first month or two, then the need arose for someone to help out doing backend working with Node.js using Amazon’s serverless tools. Even though I had little experience directly with that area, I jumped in and have learned an incredible amount and improved my soft skills and technical skills alike because of it.
In short: learn to learn.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I have many hobbies I enjoy doing. One of my personal favorites is reading, and I try to make a goal of reading a book every month this year. I also enjoy working out, and have been running off and on since I was 15. One nerdy hobby I love is 3D printing. I love to design and tinker with my printer and design small little items to give as gifts or to keep on my desk. I am constantly taking it apart or printing a new part to put on it, so it is often in 20 different pieces, but that is the fun part of it for me.
What are three things still left on your bucket list?
- See a rocket launch
- Go to Europe
- Run a marathon
