QuarkWorks: Meet the Team Series — Devun Schmutzler

Next up in our ‘Meet the Team series’ we are shining the spotlight on one of our Native Mobile Developers here at QuarkWorks!

Name:

Devun Schmutzler

Role:

Native Mobile Developer

When did you join QuarkWorks and what led you to take on this position?

I started working at QuarkWorks back in October of 2017, not long after graduating from Mizzou. I actually heard about QuarkWorks from Jacob when we got put together for a project in database class. He talked to me a bit about the company after the class was finished and mentioned that I should interview if I was interested. I decided to forgo the interview opportunity at the time while I was focusing on school. I fell in love with native mobile development while in school and reconnected with Jacob after graduation while on my job search.

What excites and energizes you about the company?

I think the most exciting thing about the company is the pace at which we are growing and the contracts we are able to pull in now. We get to work with amazing clients on challenging, impactful, and interesting projects. Getting to work on something new every few months rather than being behind a single product is refreshing, and I feel it allows us to learn at an even faster pace. Another bit I love about QuarkWorks is the culture that’s been established and the employees. Everyone here is very driven and like-minded, which allows us to produce such great work, which keeps me excited to come to work every day.

What has been your favorite project to work on or are currently working on?

My favorite project would have to be the one I’ve spent the most time on so far, which was Handshake. Handshake, as a whole, is focused on helping college students find their first professional job out of school. They connect colleges’ career services, employers, and students with the goal of diversifying opportunity. They already had a great website and iOS app for students. Our job was to create an Android app that matched the iOS one. It was my first time writing a larger scale Android app and working with Kotlin. My main focus was helping build out features and UI, which I loved. We worked alongside a wonderful team at Handshake that does their iOS app. I learned so much over the course of that year.

Advice you would give someone working at a startup?

Working at a startup affords you so many unique opportunities. I think the first thing I would tell someone just starting is to soak up all the information you can as quickly as you can. Things move at such a fast pace that it can be easy to miss out on key learning opportunities that may not be so obvious. You get to work alongside extremely talented and knowledgeable individuals everyday, take the time to listen to what they have to say and ask as many questions as you can, within reason. The second piece of advice I would give is to put forth as much effort as you’re able to. This may sound obvious, but in a startup environment your efforts will surely be noticed, whether they be good or bad. Your contribution to the company is very impactful, take advantage and do great things!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Haswell, honorary QuarkWorks employee

I’m not breaking any stereotypes here, but I like playing video games in my free time. The most interesting thing with that is that I’ve been playing the same Runescape account off and on for nearly 13 years now. I can’t seem to ever put it down for good, and always end up coming back sooner or later. Other titles I frequent currently include Halo, Fortnite, Rocket League, and League of Legends. When I’m not doing that or watching a TV show or movie, you can usually find me just spending time with friends and family. Other things that I like to do include traveling, enjoying the outdoors, playing cards, yard games, playing with my dog Haswell, and fun-league volleyball among other things.

What is your all time favorite movie?

It’s always hard to pick a favorite for this, but if I had to make a decision it’d be Apollo 13 with Interstellar being a close second. I love space in general, especially when it comes to TV and movies. Tom Hanks is a favorite actor of mine as well. The thing that puts it over the top for me personally is that it’s one of my dad’s favorites. Honestly, I watch it 3 to 4 times a year minimum.
