QuarkWorks: Meet the Team Series — Zach Doster
As we continue with our ‘Meet the Team Series’ we would like you to meet one of our awesome developers at QuarkWorks.
Web / iOS Developer
When did you join QuarkWorks and what led you to take on this position?
I joined QuarkWorks in late 2017, as an intern. I was just learning about my love for Computer Science and was ecstatic for a chance to learn more about programming outside of a classroom setting.
What excites and energizes you about the company?
QuarkWorks is a company that has adapted and changed just in the 2 years that I have been a part of the company. Not only has the company’s growth in sales been exponentially higher than when I first arrived, but so has our focus. Originally the company’s sole focus was on mobile development, but now includes backend work, web development, and also new fields like design, machine learning, and robotics.
What has been your favorite project to work on or are currently working on?
Many projects I have worked on have had different challenges, ranging from strict design requirements, to large scale projects, and to expert technical difficulty. The most interesting project has been a large robotic arm that is used to perform medical tests. The challenge of using advanced mathematics and putting them into a cutting edge technology is very exciting.
Advice you would give someone working at a startup?
When working in a startup, you’re in a small and personal environment, which is good for a number of reasons. Not only do you have a day to day relationship with your co-workers and your managers, you have a bigger impact on the company as a whole. With this in mind, it is important that you are proactive in your work, do more than you’re asked, listen to what senior developers have to say, and always learn from those that know more. When you do these consistently you raise the quality of your work and the project, and people will notice.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to try new things. I like to build some basic furniture and run a lot for exercise. I’m not particularly into reading novels, but I do like to read blog posts about trends in my field and in my local area. I’m an avid Chiefs and Mizzou football fan. Last summer I picked up golfing in a bit more of a focused way but still for fun!
Favorite Movie of All Time?
Gladiator with Russell Crowe.
