Quarry places special emphasis on the music of ’70s Memphis and how it creates a foundation for the world the characters live in. Many of the musical performances featured in the series were also shot as full music videos. Read on for music consulting group Neophonic’s insight into original song “Something’s Wrong,” performed by Alynda Lee Segarra.

Alynda Lee Segarra is the front-woman of the American folk-blues band Hurray For The Riff Raff. During our exploration for appropriate on-camera music talent, Alynda was recommended by our Quarry co-creator Michael D. Fuller and Executive Producer Matt DeRoss, both of whom were fans. We chose to have Alynda perform one of her original songs “Something’s Wrong” versus having her cover a relevant tune from the era; a decision we made a few times during the series when appropriate. The notion was that Alynda was performing at a local Memphis record store as Mac shopped for vinyl, so it made sense that she’d be playing one of her own tunes in an attempt to promote her artistry. And since “Something’s Wrong” was from Hurray For The Riff Raff’s lesser-known 2012 album Look Out Mama, we felt this creative decision would serve the story, while still allowing our audience to stay rooted in our 1972 Quarry world.
