You’ve moved to Berlin. You got the dream job or chased the change of scene and now you’re here. You got a room and new roommates and you’re looking to expand your community. Where will you go? What will you do? Who will you do it with? But more importantly, where can you eat food and drink coffee and beer?

We’ve been here for a while and we’ve got some tips…

Kallasch&– is a bar, a cinema, a venue and a community space. Kallasch& is one of the original hip bars in Moabit. It has a great comedy night and moderately priced drinks. It’s always busy on a Saturday and the bar staff are polyglots. Go to Kallasch& for a goodtime.

ZaffkeZaffke is a great local moderately priced bar. Don’t leave moabit without stopping in. The bar staff are nice and tolerant of bad German. With its cool interior, flea market furniture and cosy vibes its 100% Berlin: its dirty, its hip, its cheap. You might not find the door on your first try, but it’s worth a second attempt.

Interface Bar– a busy community hub with a warm and friendly atmosphere, you can play table football/foosball or chose from the board games stacked on the window ledges- both are free. Sit for hours with friends and play Catan, make new friends or join teams. If you’re lucky they might even let you mix your own drink.

KowskiKoswki is moderately priced and generously portioned with a week long three dish lunch menu and snacks. Breakfast is served from 10-midday. Get the Shakshuka, eggs poached in spicy tomato and green pepper sauce, comes highly recommended. Great coffee and drinks are available too. Grab a book, get a lunch or a gurken and sit in the big windows- you’ll be in love with Moabit in no time.

Doner Turm– A Döner is A Döner is a Döner, until you need one, at 1 am, or you’ll die. Döner Turm is your man, its reliable, its very very Döner and its delicious and cheap. Get garlic sauce if you’re ending the night. Don’t get the scharf (spicy) sauce if you’re sensitive- its strong. The staff are friendly and a bit cheeky, make sure you don’t take it to bed with you though, nothing stains sheets like purple cabbage.

Ya-Man– the weather in Berlin is grey, the sky is rainy and German food is meh, not always the spiciest. But then there’s Ya-Man. It’s a must visit in Moabit. Get fresh pressed juice, delicious cocktails and eat the best Jamaican food in town. The staff are great, the ambience is great, getting a table is not easy but worth the wait. Ya-Man is authentic delicious Jamaican food served with love and a soundtrack of Reggae. Ask for advice from the staff. Listen to their advice. Tell them if you can handle the spice (or not). Also Jerk Chicken cures hangovers/the blues, don’t @ me.
