Intimacy: It’s Not Just For Our Bodies

All. The. Intimacies.

The word Intimacy often gets thrown around when Humans talk about the relationships they have with their mates. Again, Humans are animals at our baseline and the hormonal drive to reproduce has led our society down a path where we only focus on the physical. But Intimacy can be so much more than making love with our bodies.

Acamelia Deadwiler, M.S. discusses four types of “Intimacy That Exist (Besides Sex)” in her article linked here. She, again, focuses on the application of Intimacy to romantic partners. However, just like a loving-kindness practice — we can gradually expand our Intimate Vibe to include not just our significant others. And not just Physical Intimacy.

Per Deadwiler — the other four “Intimacies That Exist (Besides Sex)” are defined by Emotional, Intellectual, Experiential, and Spiritual Intimacies.

Emotional Intimacy exists between Humans who trust each other. These Intimate relationships are the ones we have with our Truth-Tellers. The Humans who hold space for us in a judgment-free zone.

Intellectual Intimacy exists between Humans who respect each other. These Intimate relationships are the ones we have with our Teachers. The Humans who lead by example, but allow us the freedom to be our Real Selves with grace.

Experiential Intimacy exists between Humans who share experiences with each other. Experiential relationships are the ones we have with our Memory Keepers. The Humans who invite us along on their adventures.

Spiritual Intimacy exists between Humans who align with each other. These Intimate relationships are the ones we have with our Fellow Travelers. The Humans who help us birth Our Light.

As you can see — none of the above involves having sex. However, having said this, it’s wise to realize the many types of Intimacy overlap. And Physical Intimacy can be enhanced with the addition of any other level of Intimacy. Or it can be diminished if time passes and no further Intimacy takes root.

We, alone, can allow Intimacy in and apply it to all aspects of our existence. It’s difficult and dangerous. For to enter into Intimacy, we must remove the barriers we have built to protect ourselves from All. Things. Intimate. Being open to trust, respect, sharing, and alignment can also mean we are open to betrayal, humiliation, isolation, and disappointment.

Some Humans will never get to this place. They will embrace fear and anger. They will allow different cover stories to permeate their world. When, in fact, they lack the courage to become Intimate.

Namaste.
