A Poem

Photo by Paolo Nicolello on Unsplash

Under the shadows of male assent
she matures
to be confused by anger and kindness
love and hate
because in her life’s entirety
reigned under the male pedestal
scarred with the inability to walk streets
when the sun no longer hangs up
Mere exposure of skin,
nothing but consent for his sexual advancements
find failure in relationships
because her skin tones differ from his
at the end
reflect in mirrors,
in the fugue of self-loathe
insinuate through insecurities
that it wasn't her fault
because of her clothes
he couldn't keep it in his pants
eventually acknowledging her blemishes in resignation
see themselves not through her eyes but his
with the knowledge that in the male dictionary
that reflection in the mirror
is that of her definition.
