Which do you wear. . . and why?

There are many varieties and types of masks
. . . each with its own specific purpose.

If you happen to be in New Orleans at the time
of Mardi Gras - or in Venezia during Carnevale -
you will see many colorfully-artistic creations of
weird, highly-ornate, character imitations, etc.

Their chief purpose is for artistry and entertainment
. . . and they are definitely for everyone to see!

There are masks that are basically invisible
. . . but they do exist nonetheless!
These are masks for the role that we may be playing
in this varied and seemingly very real drama of life.

With these masks we want people to see only
what we want them to see of ourselves.

Another type of invisible mask is one that we use
for hiding our true selves from other people (for
whatever reason). . . and from even ourselves!

With this mask we attempt to keep people from
getting to really know us. . . and often forfeit
our own self-knowledge as well.
