What Dreams Are There to Comfort Trees?

As they face the white lion’s roar

Defenseless and naked as sleepers
whose blankets have slipped to the floor,
the leafless trees of winter
must face the white lion’s roar.

Wind-raked along every twig and branch
facing hardships both day and night
the generous trees like medieval priests
offer shelter to vulnerable lives.

Transported along their tireless roots
far below the frost-hardened ground,
the winter trees share alchemical sparks
conversing without making sounds.

What dreams are there to comfort trees?
What lessons in faith have they learned?
The rising of sap, the sprouting of leaves,
and Persephone’s pledge to return.

On really cold winter nights, sitting quietly in my chair, I put down my book and feel compassion for the lives that must endure the winter with little protection and much courage.

Sometimes I hear the trees around my house shaking and moaning in gusts of icy wind. I have always loved trees, but…
