Using a spreadsheet to budget can be a really helpful way to manage your money. A spreadsheet is just a digital document that lets you organise information in rows and columns and do calculations with it. It’s easy to set up a budget spreadsheet — just make a few columns for your different types of income and expenses. Some common ones are salary, investments, and rent for income, and things like rent or mortgage, car payments, and insurance for expenses.

Once you have your spreadsheet set up, start filling it in with all your income and expenses. Don’t forget to include even the small stuff. It’s also a good idea to break your expenses down into smaller categories, like groceries, dining out, and entertainment, so you can see exactly where your money is going.

Now that you have all your income and expenses entered, you can use the spreadsheet to do some calculations. For example, you can use the SUM function to add up all the values in the “Income” column and all the values in the “Expenses” column. Then, subtract your total expenses from your total income to see if you are spending more or less than you are making. A positive number means you are spending less than you are making, which is good. A negative number means you are spending more than you are making, which might be a problem.

One of the great things about using a spreadsheet for budgeting is that you can track your spending over time. Just enter your expenses for each month and use a calculation to see how much you are spending in total. This can help you see if there are any patterns in your spending, like times when you tend to overspend. Then, you can make changes to your budget to try to avoid those times.

You can also use your budget spreadsheet to set financial goals, like saving for a down payment on a house or paying off credit card debt. Just enter your goals and track your progress towards achieving them. You can also create a debt repayment plan by entering all your debts and the minimum payments you need to make for each one, and then doing a calculation to see how much you need to pay in total each month.

To make the most of your budget spreadsheet, it’s important to keep it up to date and review it regularly. As soon as you get paid or spend money, add it to the spreadsheet. And take a look at your budget at least once a month to see how you are doing. By staying on top of your budget, you’ll have a better understanding of your financial situation and be able to make smart decisions about your money.

It might seem like a lot of work to create a budget planner template. But the effort is worth it and you only need to do it once. It won’t be long before your reaping the rewards. You can save time by downloading my template made in Google Sheets at the link below.
