Objective

To design Questbook’s brand in the open. Eventually, engage with and invite designers around the world who want to contribute to it.

Some rules:

  • We’ll publicly share evolving brand ideas and decisions: The Questbook brand will evolve and grow for and with you, right before your eyes.
  • We will guide, curate and design the brand ideas and concepts: Participation will come in the form of critique of the work, feedback, additional ideas and suggestions.
  • Winning a vote doesn’t imply a winning brand: Getting our community’s input on the direction of our brand is integral. We’re doing this through user interviews and brand platform studies, rather than Design by committee. We’ll continue to keep experts involved and get more qualitative feedback from core community members.
  • We won’t initially default to crowd-sourcing the brand: Phase I will involve us designing the Questbook brand in the open and making our brand and design assets freely available to use (via Creative Commons). As the Questbook brand evolves, there’ll be more design bounties, monthly meetings and design sprints inviting your ideas and contributions.

What might this process look like?

  • We’ve already spoken to several developers to generate deep insights about what it means to be a builder and how we can create Questbook’s brand around the builder community. (Coming soon!)
  • We’re publishing our process on our Medium blog (aka, here), where we welcome your feedback.
  • Updates will be shared via our Twitter handle and in our Discord community.
  • We’ll also use our Discord community with a dedicated channel for questions, suggestions, brainstorming and even livestream some working sessions where other designers can critique and participate in the work.
  • We’re also exploring using Discourse for longer discussions and dialogue.
  • Finally, we’ll publish all brand and design assets for use under a Creative Commons (free-to-use, remix and reproduce).
  • [As part of Phase 2] In the future, open-calls and design bounties will be shared on our Github repo or alike.

Some references we’re following and drawing inspiration from:

  • Of course, Mozilla Open Design. Their blog series details the various stages involved in the process, and learnings from each.
  • SushiSwap developed their brand and visual concepts based on community feedback. They also shared their Brand roadmap and results from their brand survey publicly.
  • Polkadot updated their brand through a process that was completely on-chain. Studio Koto was awarded the on-chain bounty to articulate Polkadot’s values and lead its rebrand. Most recently, a quadratic vote was conducted to determine the Polkadot’s brand identity and logo.

We’d love any and all suggestions to make any steps in the process and experiment smoother and more inviting. Feel free to reply below or get in touch with me (via Twitter) directly.
