New Single: “Consume Me”

New Dream
Question Consumption

--

In December 2018, Canadian singer/songwriter (and former New Dream Youth Fellow) Raagini Appadurai released her new single, “Consume Me.”

The song explores the nature of mass consumption — particularly around the holidays — following an internal journey of trying to navigate the capitalist messages that constantly bombard us, while fighting to pursue what is most real and true in life.

Listen here.

Below are the lyrics to the song.

CONSUME ME (by Raagini Appadurai)

Holidays
Spent in a daze
Of tricks and things and wrapping paper
I don’t know when things all changed
When this became
The same refrain
Of songs we sing but never say
The cost we pay
To feel the way
That we ought to
The way they tell us to
Consume me

Display it all
But then stand tall
Despite the empty feeling that
Revolves around the things that show and say
The price you pay
To live this way
But only in the face of those
You need to persuade
To love you
The way they ought to
The way they tell us to
Consume me

(So you better)
Show me (couldn’t see it if you wanted to)
What’s real (now it’s taking over you)
Consume me|
(And you better)
Tell me (wouldn’t tell you if they wanted to)
What’s true (now the truth is overdue)
Consume me

Consume me
In a state of mind
That isn’t blinded by the light
So someday I know I can say
There was no cost
To live this way
To use my heart
Unrefined
And always remain unresigned
To what they tell us to
The way that we ought to
Consume me

(So you better)
Show me (couldn’t see it if you wanted to)
What’s real (now it’s taking over you)
Consume me
(And you better)
Tell me (wouldn’t tell you if they wanted to)
What’s true (now the truth is overdue)
Consume me
