“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” - Albert Einstein

Why Do We Do It?

Does anyone know why we do it?
No one seems to really know why,
Or even question the reason.

There is no voice of subtle enquiry,
Not even one lone bewildered cry,
“Why do we do it?”

How weird!
It’s like everyone knows exactly why we do it
And the reason is so obvious
It doesn’t need mentioning.

But then, maybe it’s too silly to acknowledge,
Or too embarrassing or shameful.
Is that the reason for the silence?

It seems we just do it because everyone else does it.
There’s safety in numbers, it seems.
It is like society has been brainwashed.

Perhaps we are actually afraid of not doing it
And appearing different or alone.
Seen as a rebel! Heaven forbid.
