Questioning Behaviour is the podcast where Sarah Bowen and Merle van den Akker question day to day behaviours, from the perspective of being a Behavioural Science PhD student. In this episode, they interview Nick Chater*, about the challenges within public policy, especially focusing on COVID-19 and climate change.

How did you get started in behavioural science?
Kelly: “I spent a lot of years working on technology. I worked in dot.com startups. I started doing internet consulting in 1993, and got into the banking sector, looking at technology and driving adoption and understanding how we can model consumer behavior as a way to assess risk for credit risk models. Trying to understand the fields of risk management and risk theory, so that we could then have those insights, build them into our models drive innovation on the basis of what we know about human behavior. That was me through the 90s and 2000s.

What I wanted to do is now build a framework that could make this application and development of science very practical for others to be able to follow. Because people don’t know how to develop and apply the scientific method. They don’t know how to come up with interesting questions about behavior. They don’t have different strategies and techniques to impact it and influence it. And certainly they don’t have a good grounding in the mechanics of the practice of…
