Decision making is a critical skill.

It can be annoying when you have to ask your superior what needs to be done every time you’re afraid to make the wrong call. Of course, you need to use your own (professional) judgement as there are concerns that needs to be reviewed by someone who’s above your paygrade. Understand how your superiors are almost always making a decision for their underlings.

The best way to help them is to share what you think should be done if you were in their position such that all they have to do is approve your decision.

Here are the 4 steps to I take to increase my decision-making efficiency (as a low-level office employee in the manufacturing industry):

Step #1 — Map the process

Step #2 — Recognize the pattern

Step #3 — Create a “logic map” around it

Step #4 — Update process as new scenarios come up

Observe the patterns of mistakes to see if they are products of weaknesses.
