There are a lot of tools out there which require you to install their runner on your servers to report the health of things like disk space utilization, free memory or even database access.

Today, I had an incident which stopped the replication of our primary database this wasn’t good. I had no monitoring for this because none of those services was running on my server. That’s when I had an “Ah-ha” moment. I have web servers which have access to both the master, and the slave databases, so why couldn’t I write a script to validate it and report any issues as they arise?

Sample Code — Slave Status

Once this script is set up on a web server, you can then set CheckItOn.Us to do a “Website Content” test looking for “happy”. If it finds it, the test is successful. Otherwise, it failed.

This simple test can be replicated for other stats too! Why not try it for yourself?
