Navigating Layers and frames within your pages and files can be a pain. There are so many little components and edits that comprise the design process, that constantly having to click between frame after frame, gets exhausting quickly. Also, truthfully it is quite time consuming to have to navigate your mouse all over your file to make each change. This is where, I’d like to champion learning some of the key commands Figma provides for page and layer navigation. You don’t have to learn them all but rather learning just a few can make a serious impact on speeding up your workflow. Here are some of my favorites..

Page Navigation

Press “fn” + “Up” or “Down” Arrow to Navigate Pages between pages.

Navigating Frames and Their Children

Now, you might only have a few different pages within your file, so quickly navigating between them might not be the biggest deal, however, I think we can all relate to having sometimes an embarrassingly large amount of frames within some of our pages. When that becomes the case, finding a way to quickly navigate between frames and access what is inside them becomes paramount. Use, the key commands “enter” to navigate to your selected frame’s children and then “tab” to choose between them. To navigate back out press “shift” + “tab”.

Navigating Between Frames on the same page

Another helpful navigation technique is pressing “tab” at the top level layer to navigate between different frames. It makes it really easy to find and edit frames without having to click on each.

Navigating Between Values in the Editor

Just like frames on the canvas, use “Tab” and “Shift Tab” to navigate between values in your editor. Super quick.

Alright to preserve the notion of these being “quick” that’s all I’ve got. Thank you and hope it may be a simple catalyst for speeding up your own workflow. As always if I missed something, or I’m wrong about something please let me know. Always open to learning something new.
