During the last worldwide developer conference (WWDC 22), Apple introduced some amazing updates across iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS . The tech giant unveiled a completely redesigned MacBook Air and the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro powered by the breakthrough M2 chip; new features coming to #iOS16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9; and the latest innovative technologies that enable developers to build their best apps on the App Store.

Take a quick look at the new features, announcements and important updates for developers.

iOS 16

Lock Screen

New options to personalize your experience, like adding widgets, changing UI and fonts and placeholder. You can also create and add Live Activity (for example, playing music) to the lock screen.

Messages

Now you can do editing, undo messages and pin a chat.

The participants in chat can sync music and playing video (joint viewing).

Share Play (earlier only in FaceTime) becomes available in messages (so users can now watch a video clip synchronously).

Shared with You

For developers, the new Shared with You framework and Collaboration API will help bring app’s collaboration experiences into Messages and FaceTime.

Dictation

Now works with the keyboard (smooth transition). You can select the text with your hands and change it with your voice. Automatically places marks of sticking.

Siri

App Intents is the new API for developers.

Provide zero Siri setup in app.

Live text

Translate Text Using iPhone Camera on iOS 16. Supports many languages including English, German, Arabic, Italian, Korean, etc.

For developers, Live text with a new API is available.

Visual Look Up

Now when you touch and hold on the subject of an image you can lift it away from the background and place it in app like iMessage.

Apple Wallet

Share keys using apps (like Mail, WhatsApp). Shared keys can add to Apple Wallet or for working with the IETF(who don’t have an iPhone).

Apple Pay

You can use it as terminal. Apple Pay Later lets you split the cost of an Apple Pay purchase.

Apple Maps

Updated design (not available for all cities and countries) and Multi-stop routing. This year Mapkit brings the latest innovations from Apple maps to your app letting your users explore the world in amazing details.

MapKit has got an updated new API.

Family Sharing

Share purchases and subscriptions with five family members (like Apple TV and music).

Share iCloud Drive, Photo (just what you want), location, etc.

Safety check

You can now review who you’ve shared access with and re-set information including passwords, messages, and other applications on the device. There’s an emergency reset option too, which allows quick resetting of all information. Safety check is lauded as a new feature focusing on the safety (and privacy) of victims of domestic abuse and violence.

Home

The HomeKit app gets a new section for categories and a redesigned Home tab, as well as new smart home connectivity standard, Matter. Matter enables smart home accessories to work together across platforms.

HomeKit contributed as a foundation of this new standard. The updated Home App features allow to check the doors, turn off the lights, etc., and the app navigation has been redesigned to make it easier for the users.

Car Play

The next generation of Car Play provides content for all the driver’s screens. Dashboard customization to your taste.

Watch OS

  • New Share Sheet and Photos Picker APIs.
  • With CallKit, you can start, end or mute VoIP from apps.
  • Track Medications.

New M2 chip

MacBook Air

  • M2 chip
  • Magic safe return
  • Battery (18h video playback)
  • For the first time the Air supports fast charge (67W adapter)

MacBook Pro (13-inch)

Mac OS Ventura

Stage Manager

It automatically arranges all windows.

Spotlight

Quick look feature with tap on the space bar. Also find images from photo library. Search the text inside the image using Live Text. It is also a great way to get information. Also available on iOS and iPadOS.

Safari

Shared Tab Groups (you can share all tabs in one place).

Passkeys

A next generation credential that’s more secure, easier to use. To create a passkey just use TouchID or FaceID to authenticate. A unique digital key is created that only works for the site (or for the app) it was created for. It can’t be phished since the passkey never leaves your devices. Can be shared across apple devices using iCloud Keychain. Cross Platform support: you’ll be able to walk up to a non-Apple device and sign in to website or app using just your iPhone by QR.

Metal 3

MetalFX Upscaling new API enables developers to render rich, visually complex scenes even faster. Also adds a new Fast resource loading API so GPU can more quickly access high-quality textures.

FaceTime

New feature: switch call to another device. Use iPhone as your webcam.
