An Interview with Deb Groves Harman

Deb Groves Harman has written a memoir Love and Loss in Cambodia: A Memoir about her experiences living in Cambodia with her ex-husband.

She has also hiked the Camino de Santiago in Spain three times.

I love reading memoirs and have been writing a memoir for five years, so I am excited to talk to Deb about her memoir and hiking the Camino, and to see how the two intersect in her life, perhaps, as a source of healing.

A retired high school English teacher, she now plays in a band, runs a beach house Airbnb, and writes on Medium — a lot!

But most of all, I want to find out how difficult it is to write a memoir, especially when her story involves the mysterious death of her ex-husband.

Take us to the beginning … why did you decide to go to Cambodia?

It’s kind of a long story, which is why I wrote a book! Initially, my ex and I were traveling for six months around Southeast Asia. We backpacked in and out of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Sumatra, Malaysia, and Myanmar. I always told him no about Cambodia, but
