Climate finance and climate action have become a priority in France. From doubling its contribution to the Green Climate Fund, to passing the Law on Energy and Climate in 2019 — the country has taken positive steps in that direction.

However, despite the steps being taken, there has been pushback from the general public. For example, the Yellow Vest Movement which took the country by storm and was in response to hikes in diesel taxes. Further, the government also faced criticism from civil society actors and the public upon dropping 149 citizens’ proposals from the French Climate Law. Some of the proposals put forward after the Citizen’ Climate Convention range from regulating advertising on polluting products, to making ‘ecocide’ a punishable offense.

Quilt.AI and Komons partnered to research climate change discourse in the French digital landscape. Our research dives into online discourse on climate change issues, legislations, the environment, and other emerging topics. It further identifies and categorizes people’s perceptions and attitudes towards climate change and related topics. The research study looked at nearly 20,000 tweets, several hundred Facebook posts, and almost 20 million unique searches.

The research focuses on the different audience segments online and their discourse on climate change, climate law, and the environment in France. Findings from the research can help policymakers, NGOs, and government organizations tailor effective climate change campaigns and interventions.
