Grab some salt, limes and a sombrero, It’s National Tequila Day!
Every 24th July, we experience the phenomenon known as National Tequila Day. A day that promotes all things Mexican and gives us an excuse (not that we need it) to induldge in some great Latin cuisine and beverages. Unfortunately for some of us, this year it falls on a Monday. I’m aware that necking shots of Tequila on a Monday can be considered a taboo activity, but if you manage to make it out to a bar in the evening or you’re enjoying drinks at home, we want you to have the authentic experience. We have uncovered some critical tequila info, as well as different ways you can enjoy this exotic beverage, meanwhile impressing your amigos with some top Tequila trivia.
Mezcal & Tequila. Know the Difference!
They’re both distilled beverages made in Mexico from Agave plants. But in order to be true Tequila, it must be made of at least 51% Blue Agave and can only produced in certain areas in Jalisco state, where the city of Tequila is located.
Mezcal however can be made from the hundreds of different Agave varieties and it’s quality standards are nowhere near as comprehensive as Tequila. It can regularly be seen bottled and served with a mezcal worm.. yes a worm!
No Hangovers! Let me explain, I know it sounds too good to be true, but if the prospect of dragging yourself into work on a Tuesday morning with an unbearable hangover is putting you off, you’ll be glad to know this! According to an article in Forbes, tequila does not cause hangovers. Provided you make sure you’re drinking 100% Agave. So make sure you stay off the cheap stuff!
Blue Agave plants need to mature for 8–12 years in order to make Tequila, but it takes Quiqup less than an hour to get you the finest Tequila from The Quiq Bar by 31Dover.
In Mexico, Tequila is drank neat, without lime and salt. If you want to keep it authentic, then ditch the other stuff. When Mexican’s want to enjoy their tequila with some lime and salt, they’ll prepare margaritas, but shots are always drank without the extras.
Believe it or not, but Tequila has health benefits! Studies have shown that a component in tequila helps break down dietary fat, lowering the body’s levels of bad cholesterol. A shot taken after dinner can also aid your body’s digestion. Sounds reasonable.
This one is the best one yet. The Aztecs discovered the ‘pulque’ when lightning struck an agave plant, cooking the insides of the plant and causing the juice to seep out. Seeing as how it was sweet and mildly alcoholic, the Aztecs believed the drink to be a gift from the gods that opened communication between mortals and them.
