Meet Our Dev Team — The Wizards Behind Quiqup’s Tech

With a fast growing culture of convenience, everyone is coming to expect things to happen at the speed of a button click. Everything we’re doing here at Quiqup is to fulfil this desire — to give you instant access to your local marketplace. Ultimately, we want you to be able to deliver your goods, or have goods delivered to you with no more effort than merely moving your fingers on your screen and opening your door to meet your Quiqee.

Our Developers are the minds who turn this desire into a reality. Composed of a choir of techie wizards, they’re the ones responsible for delivering a top notch real-time product experience for our users.

From developing the actual tech which enables deliveries, to maintaining system performance and reliability, and implementing improvements (such as new features) — our Dev Team works day and night to make Quiqup’s flexible, on-demand logistics service possible.

As Volker, our Chief Architect, puts it:

“We’re the logistics behind the logistics platform.”

The man himself. Our Chief Architect, Volker!

What is their mission? Building a roaring Quiqup engine

“If the guys from the Product Team are like the designers of a vehicle, shaping out how they want the car to look — then we’re the engineers that make the engine and fine tune it to make it faster and more reliable.”

  • Deliver operational efficiency. This means measuring, maintaining and improving the performance, capability and scalability of the platform. If a search takes 500 milliseconds to complete, for instance, then our Devs work to make it 50 milliseconds.
  • Concept and implement improvements. Together with the Data Science, Product and CSR teams, our Devs are always thinking up different ways to improve the services we provide. That could mean building new features, such as creating an autocomplete function on the search bar, or using machine learning techniques to better our driver assignment processes.

“We work with the principle that things can always be better than how they are now, so we’re constantly conjuring up ideas on how to improve Quiqup’s services. Something really cool that we’re looking into is using neural networks in problem solving — where we’re designing systems modelled after the human brain to improve our ETAs — the human brain!”

How do they do it? Coding, cunning and collaboration

So, what would a typical day in the life of a Quiqup Developer involve?

  • Brainstorming on whiteboards. How do you start building a kickass platform? Sharing ideas. When there’s something to be implemented, our Developers go to the whiteboard and dissect the problem into individual tasks. Crucially, they identify opportunities to collaborate with other Quiqup teams, and set up the necessary action plans to achieve these tasks.
  • Coding, analysing and debugging. Building, crunching and studying the tech frameworks behind the Quiqup platforms and looking at how they might be improved — which also includes the examination and extermination of any bugs squirming around in the code.
  • Breaking things. Finding and filling the cracks in the product is essential to improvement. This means subjecting the platform to every manner of stress where it can fail, to try your hardest to break it apart so you can put it back together in a more robust form.
  • Meetups and conferences. Frequenting the best conferences and meetups around so they stay up to date with the latest developments in the field, as well as seeking inspiration for new approaches to creating technical solutions.

“A logistics platform isn’t just made up of the fleet of drivers and vehicles that physically take your goods from A to B — it’s also the technological structures which support and coordinate all the different parts of the company and actually make the operation possible.”

And as always, feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!
