Seals are semi-aquatic carnivorous marine animals that live mostly in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Seals belong to a group of animals known as “pinnipeds” which also include Walruses and Sea lions. Listed below are some of the most fascinating facts about these cool animals.

Seals Are Related To Skunks, Bears, And Badgers

Scientists and evolutionary biologists have been able to trace the origins of seals back to land-dwelling carnivores, including bears (Ursidae), Mustelidae (badgers, otters, and weasels), and Mephitidae (skunks and stink badgers).

In 2007, a nearly complete skeleton of a semi-aquatic carnivore dating back thousands of years ago was discovered in Nunavut, Canada. It was speculated to be the evolutionary link between seals and land mammals.

Earless Seals Actually Do Have Ears

While “Earless” seals do not have the external ear flaps that are present on fur seals and sea lions, they do have “internal” ears that are present beneath the surface of the skin. All pinnipeds can hear better underwater than they do on land.
