Arrival is a story about the Humanities and how they can save humanity from itself. Science can only go so far, for us, for extraplanetary species, etc.

The space-faring race of squids that land on Earth don’t experience time the way we experience time. This is due to their language. Language is so fundamental to our sense of how things work, how we experience time, that, were you to adopt a language based on circles, you could see and affect both the past and the future.

To understand this circle language, one would need an empathetic person, one who had experienced a great loss, and who has degrees from nice schools in Linguistics.

Once it’s understood, people realize how everything and everyone is connected and cease having national interests that put their countries at odds with other countries. Everyone gets along. And then the two main characters hook up at the very end during a montage, a nice surprise.

The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the cinematography and the soundtrack.

9.5/10
