How do you stay motivated to work every day on a long and challenging project?
First, make sure the project is something you’re passionate about. If it’s not, you’ll be struggling the entire way.
Next, establish a plan with milestones and celebrate reaching the milestones. Don’t wait until the end to give yourself (and perhaps your team) the credit they are due.
Don’t be surprised when it gets hard as hell. That’s normal.
Don’t get too discouraged when it takes longer than expected.
Direction is More Important Than Speed ~ Farnum Street Maxim
Don’t burn yourself out working too many hours. That can kill the passion for almost any project.
When you’re tempted to stop or make a dramatic pivot, don’t make the decision quickly. Look at the pros and cons. Sleep on it a few days. Share your thoughts with others that are qualified to give feedback.
Will the next project honestly be any easier?
If you do decide to stop or pivot, write about the experience in your journal and figure out what lesson you’ve learned.
There is always a lesson.
