What non-work related skill can improve your life the most?

I’ll suggest the ability to listen, understand and empathize.

To often, we carry on a conversation, not really listening, we’re just waiting for a pause so we can segue into what WE want to talk about.

Turn off the monologue in your head.

Start listening.

Ask relevant questions.

If a person is talking about their job, don’t respond by talking about your job.

Instead, ask them how they got into that line or work, or if they enjoy the work, or what is the most challenging part of their job or the most rewarding.

These are all questions that require a more thoughtful response, one that steps outside the rote answers.

Try to understand the point of view of the other person.

Don’t be surprised if it turns into the most honest and revealing conversation you’ve had in a long time.

You can do this with strangers, friends, or family members.

Family members may the the hardest because we’ve already taken on various roles and relationships and you’re about to break the mold.

Strangers are sometimes the easiest. I’ve taken up conversations at a park that have become very honest and revealing about the other person’s life, ambitions, hopes, fears, and anxieties.

When the other person asks you similar questions you have to be prepared for honesty as well.

If you’re wondering how this improves your life — making authentic connections with other people enriches you and the other person.

It’s one of the most rewarding things we can do.
