Just a quick update from us here at Quoralis. Last time we talked about our first user study and, well, we’ve done another one! This time we went to a retirement village and we were allowed to ask some of the residents and staff a few questions. The funniest moment of the day was seeing Nick being asked to marry one of the 90+ year old residents.

We feel like we’ve got a decent amount of knowledge about the daily lives of older people now, as well as the types of metrics retirement village staff are interested in. Therefore, we have started working on the web portal that will be used to monitor the FallCast devices.

FallCast is a wearable technology that we are developing as part of the C-Prize competition. We aim to use this wearable to improve predictions of when a person is likely to fall, providing an opportunity to intervene before an injury occurs.

Parallel to this, we’ve cobbled together a (monstrous-looking) prototype attached to the shoe. It currently just ties to the top of the shoe, but this is just for testing purposes of course!

One of our early Frankensteinian prototypes

One of our struggles has been getting some accurate data from the sensors. After two weeks of tinkering with it, we have decided that our current results are good enough to go on for the time being and that our focus should be on getting that information to the end user.

We’re looking for people like you!

…if you’re the kind of person who likes to tinker with hardware, electronics, Internet of Things, maths or data science, that is! We’re getting by pretty well so far, but we’d like to increase our productivity to the next level, for which we need someone with a bit more experience with the above than us.

If you’re interested and you’re based in Auckland, we’d be keen to catch up with you over a coffee. Drop us a line on nick.mertens@quoralis.com or sheldon.nunes@quoralis.com or you can find us on Twitter.
