Reflection and Signs in the Wind

“And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith], and in yourselves. Then will you not see?” (Al Qur’an, Surah Az Zariyat, 51,20–21) In the wind there are powerful lessons and signs for people who reflect.

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

How do we think about Allah? To ponder on His essence would transgress our minds. We cannot see or hear Him or perceive Him through our senses. Yet Allah says:

And those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. (Al Baqarah, 2:165)

The true believers love Allah more than anyone else. How can this be possible when Allah is hidden from us?

He is the First and the Last, and the Manifest and the Hidden. (Surah Al Hadid, 57:3)

The Prophet ﷺ said, as narrated by Abu Salih from Abu Huraira:

O Allah, You are the First and there is nothing before You; You are the Last and there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest and there is nothing above You, and You are the Hidden and there is nothing nearer than You. Settle from us the debt and enrich us from poverty. (Muslim, 2713a)

Allah is hidden from sight and the senses yet He is manifest through His creation, His revelation to the Prophets and through the inner nature of human beings who know Him as Lord.

By reflection on Allah’s creation and revelation, we can understand our Lord more. This is the way to think about Him.

Dear reader, think about the wind. In the wind there is surely a sign of Allah’s mercy and kindness upon us. Of His generosity and taking care of us.

Allah says:

By the spreaders spreading, (Surah Mursalat, 77:3)

The winds spread pollens and clouds, making life and rain possible. The circulation of winds is essential for the movement of clouds, without which life would cease.

Reflecting on the wind should make us reflect on Allah being the Rabb (master and sustainer) of the worlds. It is a proof of His care and mercy upon us, His knowledge and wisdom in creation, His subtleness in perfecting everything, and His patience and forbearance with our sins.

Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds. (Surah Al A’raf, 7:54)

That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds. (Surah Ghafir, 40:64)

O you mankind, you are the poor (in relation) to Allah; and Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy. (Surah Fatir, 35:15)

Had Allah willed, He could have released the winds upon us, causing it to be a force of indiscriminate destruction, as we see in tornadoes and in the case of the rebellious ‘Aad.

And as for ‘Aad, they were destroyed by a bitterly cold, insolent wind. (Surah Al Haqqah, 69:6)

The wind is a sign of fearing the Lord, turning back to Him, singling Him out for our sincerity, and our utmost need of Him if He choses to deal with us sternly.

It is a display of Allah’s magnanimity and power, and a confidence for those who work for His cause, and a warning to those who oppose Him.

Then will you not reason? (Al Baqarah, 2:44)
