We’re hiring a Lead/Senior Software Engineer at Qwell. Please reach out to us at “hiring [at] qwell.com.” If you have any thoughts or feedback please send us a note at “hello [at] qwell.com”.

I think it would make the most sense to start from the very beginning of how I ended up in Qwell. That would not be necessarily my start date, but rather far back when I first started working at my family’s business-to-business (B2B), fluorescent light bulb distribution start up business back in Korea. I found the quick pace and the dramatic day-to-day changes and handling the challenges the business brought exciting and fulfilling. The business changed and grew right in front of my eyes and was like the little sibling I never had.
Fast forward a few years, and living in a few different countries later, I went to college to study math and economics then went onto become an actuary. (These facts will become relevant!) While I was working as an actuarial analyst at a Fortune 100 insurance company, I realized that I missed working on something I believed in, knowing everyone on my team, knowing my customers/users and, most of all, knowing that I’m bettering their lives somehow. I was also always interested in coding and tech from my brief encounter with a programming class in college, so I achieved my goal of switching into tech by attending a coding bootcamp in New York City.
While I was interviewing for my first role, which was not too long ago, Qwell checked all my boxes. Qwell was founded by Bertie and Rachel, both practicing doctors, who knew the ins and outs of the healthcare industry, who have experienced what could be different, and what could be improved in healthcare. The Qwell team, which consisted of account managers and developers, were all very passionate about bringing about a positive change to healthcare through technology, and becoming the best app in this field. I was sold. I was also very pleased with how tech centered the company was over some other healthtech companies I was interviewing at the time, so I made my decision.
As a new developer, I did not know fully what to expect, since it was a new field for me- what kind of support I would get, and what I would get to work on as a junior developer. I knew it was a full stack role, and I would have the opportunity to get familiar with everything, which was important to me. As a pretty lean team, I really truly get to do everything- fixing the smallest bugs in the code with Timekit, to working on big scheduling features that hundreds and thousands will eventually use. I expected to be overwhelmed at first, but I got to slowly build my confidence from the front end to the back end, databases, etc. with the help from some great mentoring from our tech lead, Stephen and warm encouragement from Rachel and Bertie. The best part of the job is seeing how some of these ideas get translated into actual features on the app. Most of my day is filled with coding, but as someone with a very eclectic background, I was able to contribute ideas towards the design of certain pages, which was really cool!
I’ve worked at a lot of places, from early to mature startups, to big corporations, and in a lot of different fields like research, and non profit, but I’ve been the most fulfilled at this role. I feel like my ideas a truly heard and valued.
