Imagine what the world could be: Why you should rise for a real science march

eople forget what an enormous money pit the U.S. military budget has become. Official data shows a whopping $773.5 billion for 2017 already and it’s not even including the more or less unofficial resources poured into every single intelligence agency. In fact, this makes up for more than 50% of all federal spending per year!

In stark contrast — Science and research gets only a tiny portion of the budget — it’s currently clinging on for dear life at about 3.5%. Now Imagine we’d swap these budgets to boost science and create really meaningful, useful, life preserving things instead.

If you’re honest, the future lies not in something like the electric car, as we are told to believe. The e-car has been invented some 150 fricking years ago, and its novelty simply has worn off. I’m not talking about supposed environmentally friendly solar panel farms or fossil powered rockets that might shoot us to Mars, either.

No, just let it sink in… reflect the topic a couple more minutes. What could all this paper and credit money do instead for us — as long as we still believe in its value to begin with? An educated person could come to the conclusion that having such a gigantic budget at our disposal, is best spent on the most precious commodity of all — Time!

Time can actually be ‘generated’ through advancements in science and by medical research. Think about it again. More than $773.5 billion a year to fight and ultimately prevail over humanities most serious diseases, thus put an end to all the suffering totally unacceptable with the opportunity and creativity we have as a species. 5 to 10 years from now — all this could be a thing of the past.

Scientist could really concentrate on the most promising and beneficial things and utilize their very own talents, pushing themselves to see their full potential realized instead of going where the corporate interest and money is.

Demanding a radical change and swapping budgets really means changing perspectives on humanity and its future. It is our time to do so, our way of fighting for what is a just cause, the only cause.

In principle, we should rise and march. We should unite to find a spiritual successor to Women’s March — we should go for what’s round the bend this time without being financed by the same people who put their interests first and make money from pain and suffering. We shall not react to what is happening in our big bubble, we need to pinch off what’s holding us back and march ahead. In the end, if you don’t go forwards you go backwards. Be proactive — demand what’s best for all of us, even though people think you are a dreamer… after all, that’s all we need: A Dream!

Imagine there’s no army
It’s easy if you try
No war mongering between us
Above us only sky

Imagine all the dollars
It isn’t hard to do
Spent for no more bombers
Or gruesome droning, too

Imagine just instead
I wonder if you can
Shifting into research
To become a brotherhood of man

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will march as one

Thank you, John!
