The Courage to Live with Uncertainty
It’s where we find our faith
On Wednesday afternoon, I picked up my daughter early from school. As many of you know, sometimes parents need to make difficult choices with incomplete information. Wednesday was one such day for my family.
My daughter is currently a student at the Jewish Day School next door to our local JCC. On Wednesday, the campus hosted a massive community event to celebrate — even in these difficult times — Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence day. The community mustered what joy it could find, and arranged rides and games. Jewish organizations hosted tables and gave away prizes. A group of children sang HaTikvah, and a ride-on train drove in circles around the large activity field.
And, just steps away from the parking lot entrance, was a ‘Nakba Day Protest.’ In order to enter the celebration, one had to drive past the protestors who held signs with anti-Israel images while chanting pro-Palestinian rhetoric.
Due to a prior commitment we weren’t able to attend the festival, but still, I made the choice to pick up my daughter early so that she wouldn’t witness the protest. I wasn’t confident in the decision, but I know my daughter, and I worried that the image would be fodder for nightmares. And as you can imagine, I value my sleep!
