Oh, hello, Hosltee Reflection Cards. You’re up! Time for another card deck review exploring this deck people have been telling me about for a while.

A 3D blue and purple cartoon sitting and thinking with thought bubbles above their head.

🤔 What’s in the deck?

Let’s explore what’s physically included when you buy this deck.

→ Total of 52 cards, each with two questions per card.

→ Two ‘Levels’ to each card. It’s split down the middle with a horizontal rule. One side is a white background and represents an icebreaker question, more surface level. The side with the color on it is meant to be a deeper-level question.

→ The colors each represent a specific theme (13 in total) — intention, kinship, wellness, compassion, simplicity, adventure, creativity, passion, resilience, integrity, gratitude, reflection, and wildcard.

💡What I think.

My overall thoughts about the quality, content, themes, and more.

→ Another flimsy box!! Such an opportunity here for someone to create different size sturdy boxes that card deck collectors can buy — I’ve searched for them with no luck, so share a link if you have one!

→ Good quality cards which are a bit smaller, makes them nice to travel with. They feel nice to the touch and have a bit of a texture to them (which also cuts down on shine in bright light.)

→ Not sure I understand, or always agree with, the different levels of ‘surface’ and ‘deeper’ they applied. I think they could have just kept them all in one level here.

→ While I think the concept of themes is a good approach, there are A LOT. Also, having a reflection theme in a deck that’s supposed to be all reflection seemed a bit off to me.

→ A lot of the questions on the cards appeal to me, however, there are a handful I personally would never use. I also usually reword most of these in my own brand voice, with slightly different wording.

→ Even though each card is colored for the theme it represents. You always have to have the card with the themes key handy to remember what you’re looking at. With 13 themes, this is hard to remember without your key. It would be nice if the card said the category somewhere, maybe on the back of each card. This approach would also make them more color blind friendly.

😍 My fav cards.

There is definitely a smattering of cards I really enjoy here.

‘Adventure’ Themed : “When was the last time you tried something new?”— While pretty straightforward, I love this card. We usually never take a moment to reflect on this, a great one to ask ourselves and others.

‘Passion’ Themed : “When do you feel most alive?”This one gets us to think about those things that bring us energy and even joy. What keeps us going?

‘Compassion’ Themed : “What makes you weird?”I like this one, although I’d word my own question differently to say instead, “How do you embrace your weird?” It’s so important to lean into our difference; they are what makes us uniquely ourselves!

‘Integrity’ Themed : “If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any quality, what would it be?” This is an interesting one, although I’m not sure why it’s categorized in the integrity theme. I have used this question in many different ways before.

‘Creativity’ Themed : “What have you read, seen or listened to that has shaped your life?” I like how this is phrased beyond just what books or podcasts do you like. It adds an element that helps you relate to your life and how it’s affected you.

👩‍💻 How do I use this as a facilitator?

Reflection cards overall are an excellent tool for opening and even closing moments in a workshop.

Here’s some ways I’ve used these before:

→ Ice Melters — These questions can be modified for ice melter activities. Or even check-in questions (you can set them up as flashcards or polls in Butter! 🧈)

→ Inspiration — You can align these questions with the desired outcome of your workshop. If something is in harmony with that, it could be an inspiration to build out a bigger activity around it.

✨ Overall this deck was worth the purchase, I’ll get some good mileage out of many of these cards! ✨
