November 30th Reads
Have you ever tried the 24-hour reading challenge?
Over the weekend, one of the groups I’m part of on discord did it together. I’m currently polishing off the last two hours.
The 24 hour reading challenge is where you read for 24 hours but there is no specific time period where you have to complete. You can do it in 48 hours, one week, multiple days, however your schedule runs.
I really enjoyed it. I have done a lot of the 24 in 48 challenges in the past two months. The 24-hour challenge felt a lot more relaxed and I enjoyed my reads more.
I’ve been focusing on knocking out a few ARC and library books before beginning December’s readathons.
Last: Krampus by Brom
If I’m going to do a holiday book, I prefer for the characters to hate Christmas, be grinch like or be considered the “bad guy”. Check, check, not so much check.
Brom created a captivating tale of Krampus, who is trying to bring back the Yule spirit while also punishing the wicked. However, you see him more as humane than monster, wanting nothing more than wanting to be remembered. I loved the belsnickels, humans bit by Krampus who now serve him, especially Isabelle who rescues a child out of a bad situation. You get that they’re people, just like us.
I loved the adventure part of the story: hiding from Santa (whose mission is to kill) as well as stay out of the public eye (the government is the bad guy in this one as they kill and destroy lives).
It was one of the best reads of the year for me and I plan to read it next December.
Current: NOS4A2 by Joe Hill and Krampus and the Christmas Thief by Eldritch Black
To be honest, it’s hard for me to read a book in sections. I either read really far ahead or I don’t read at all for a week.
I started NOS4A2 over the weekend, knowing that I couldn’t read more than 40% of it before December 1st. I tried to section it out and failed.
However, I’m really enjoying it. I love the world building and different settings so far in the book. I like the creepy feeling I get from Manx.
I wanted to read a Joe Hill because I was curious. I love his father (Stephen King)’s writing and wanted to see what Hill offers his readers. I’m excited to really dig into this book at midnight.
Also, I’m reading Krampus and the Christmas Thief for a holiday themed readathon over this week. While I don’t love Christmas, I love some of the creators in the book community and want to participate when they host a challenge.
So far, it’s interesting. Krampus wants to take Gabrielle on Krampus night. However, Gabrielle is too good to be taken. So he decides to kidnap her brother Percival. The book follows her on her quest to find and rescue him.
Next: Ghost Talker by Byrd Nash
I received an ARC from Netgalley around Halloween about a medium who can speak to ghosts and helps solve crimes. It’s a novella and I’m interested to see how it turns out.
What have you been reading this past week? Any promising reads in the week ahead? As always, I’d love to know.
