Almost weekly, news stories break about new Earth observation (EO) satellite capabilities, analysis tools, and artificial intelligence. These capabilities separately and combined are changing how we examine the changing world and the pace and precision with which we respond to it.
These capabilities also raise several questions for the Global Development Community (GDC):
- How does the influx of Earth imagery impact the GDC?
- How can the GDC nurture and advance a growing and inclusive community of geospatial professionals?
- What are the best strategies for encouraging innovation and expanding the knowledge base to influence the developing world’s most significant social, economic and environmental challenges?
- What are the best practices for using remote sensing data?
- What are the compelling use cases?
These questions drive our new online publication, Radiant.Earth Insights. We aim to provide the GDC with timely and in-depth insights to keep up with the quickly-evolving remote sensing marketplace. The articles will range from a basic introduction for readers to gain an understanding of the EO landscape, to reviews on existing commercial systems and new entrants to the market fueled by venture capital and cutting-edge technology. Other topics will focus on the drone industry, highlighting market opportunities, challenges, and applications; and on how recent advances in machine learning and blockchain technologies could impact the GDC. There will be discussions on the creation of metadata standards for imagery and a variety of other relevant topics.
In keeping with our commitment to promote the use of open datasets, we will also highlight the effort of governments across the globe, and showcase exciting use cases.
Above all, we will celebrate people who are innovating with geospatial technologies to support global development missions.
