Is a Cure for Cancer being kept from use by the Big Drug Companies?

“Imagine a commercial plane crashed and there were some fatalities involved. You can be sure that would make the headline of every major newspaper. Well, we have the equivalent of 8–10 planes crashing EVERY DAY with everyone on board dying from cancer.

Nearly two million Americans are diagnosed with cancer every year — one person out of three will be hit with a cancer diagnosis at some time in their lives, in spite of the massive technological advances over the past half-century.

Western medicine is no closer to finding a “cancer cure,” while cancer has grown into a worldwide epidemic of staggering proportions. The statistics speak for themselves:

  • In the early 1900s, one in 20 people developed cancer
  • In the 1940s, one in 16 people developed cancer
  • In the 1970s, it was one in 10
  • Today, it’s one in three!

According to the CDC, about 1,660,290 (1.66 million) new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2013. If overall death rates are falling, why are incidence rates still on the rise? The answer is simple: the 40-year “war on cancer” has been a farce. The cancer epidemic is a dream for Big Pharma, and their campaigns to silence cancer cures have been fierce “

The post goes on to explain how cancer is big business and that the industry is holding back a cure. This myth always comes up in many areas, both on the internet and in everyday life. That there is some sort of huge conspiracy to cover up the “Cure for Cancer”.

Let’s assume the conspiracy is true and say that there is a cure out there. For this conspiracy to have any truth you are saying everyone who had researched and developed this cure is a heartless evil person and would rather take financial gain instead of helping humanity. This is both ridiculous and sad. Sad that you have so little faith in humanity! And ridiculous because in terms of financial gain, how would they achieve this? They aren’t selling the cure? You must be implying that the drug and therapy companies are paying them out.

Ok, so this research group is being paid out by the big evil companies. What’s to stop another research group from stumbling across the cure? As with a lot of scientific advancements, they don’t occur all at once. They are tiny incremental steps forever expanding our frontier of knowledge. So if one group had developed the cure, another group wouldn’t be far off. So these companies would forever be paying more research groups to hold of from announcing they had discovered the cure. Would it be better for the drug and therapy companies to by the cure and replace their current treatment? Essentially having no effect on their bottom line and everyone benefits?

And finally, for this conspiracy to work you would be saying that scientists are more focused on financial incentives that discovery and advancement. You have to remember that scientists are not like the people on wall street. Most of the time they do there work for the pure excitement of discovery and maybe modern compensation. I think any scientist who has discovered the cure for cancer would tell everyone as soon as possible. This would instantly put this scientist amongst the greats, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin…ect. They would instantly become immortal.

We have looked at entertaining the idea that the conspiracy is true. Now let’s look at the facts a bit more. First off I would just like to say that there is no cure to cancer, because cancer is not one thing. There are over 100 types of cancers, and to develop a cure for everyone would be very very difficult. Instead research is often focused on certain types of cancers, say prostate or breast. So they can’t be holding a cure for cancer, because there will not be a blanket cure for every cancer.

I couldn’t agree with the author in one area though, that the incidence of cancer is increasing. I haven’t checked the authors stats on the rate of historically incidence, but today’s incident rate of 1 in 3 is accepted. This figure is obviously over an entire lifetime. The world health organisation is also forecasting an increasing incidence of cancer. They expect a 70% increase of cancer cases over the next 2 decades.

There are different reasons why this has increased from “1 in 20” in the 1900s to 1 in 3 today. The main reasons are aging population, and early detection, and modern lifestyle.

The word Cancer was first used in the middle ages, around 1391. So we have known about cancer for a while but, the ability to detect and diagnosis of someone having cancer has increased substantially. If the technology to detect and diagnose someone with cancer becomes widely available and … then no figure the incidence of cancer patients will increase. We are just diagnosing them better. I have heard but can’t remember that x number of men die without event knowing they had prostate cancer.

Aging population is also increasing the incidence of cancer. As cancer normally forms following an abnormal division, and that the cells Telomeres have decreased over time. The chance of an abnormal division occurring increasing with increasing age. So the fact that today we live to an average of 85 in Japan 201 6 compared to ~45 in 1920s Britain will also increase the number of people affected by cancer. We are just living long enough for cancer to affect us.

The other factor that in increasing the number of cancer incidence is our modern lifestyle. Generally it is widely known that smoking causes cancer, and indeed the number of smokers have decreased. But other cause of cancer are on the increased, the main one being an unhealthy diet with low fruit and vegetables, along with being obese and severely overweight. Should we have similar campaigns targeting obesity as smoking? Other factors that increase the risks are the likes of urban air pollution.

Ok so this is all a bit gloom and doom. Every increasing cancer incidence rates and cure for types of cancer have not been developed yet. There is an upside though. With modern treatment techniques and technological advancements, as well as increased interventions, the mortality of cancer is decreasing all around the world for both men and women. More people diagnosed cancer, but more people surviving cancer. So should we stop focusing all the media’s attention on finding a “cure” and be thankful that the current methods we are using are greatly improving and decreasing the fatality rate of cancer. That’s not to say that finding a cure is not a worthy cause, it is. But we have the means to save a lot of lives, but all these myths on the internet about cancer cures being hidden from use and the big company profiting from death is hurting our ability to help everyone.

This is a post in a series of radiation and radiotherapy myths that I will explore. I normally find these on the internet but if you know of a myth or have a question please share and we can explore that. You can find the original article here. The other hilarious thing with this particular article is that it links itself in some cases. So if you try to look for the underlying data you are just sent back to their article.
