Four Design Non-Systems

Design systems have become a popular way to ensure consistency and efficiency in the design process. If they are well-understood and well-used, they’re supposed to be without fault.

However, some have argued that these systems can be limiting and fail to tap into the full potential of creativity and innovation.

They’re perfect. Also they suck.

Let’s explore alternative ways of thinking about design, inspired by concepts from chaos theory, non-linear dynamics, self-organization, and emergence. These concepts offer a different perspective on design, one that is more adaptable, dynamic, and spontaneous.

Note that I am merely proposing alternative conceptual frameworks, and sharing some personal stories, but I’m not offering detailed blueprints.

Creativity often comes from using a foreign perspective on a familiar domain. Likewise, I’m merely pointing to four different mountaintops you could climb. Design will look different from up there.

How different? Only way to find out is to put on your hiking boots and climb.
