When you’re ready to switch podcast players, maybe the most critical aspect of making the switch smoothly is importing all your shows into the new app. So it’s frustrating when you use the import tool and then… hey, where’d the rest of my shows go?

I’ll explain where they went in a sec, for those who are interested in the “why.” (Or you can jump to the explanation right now.) But if you’re reading this article, odds are you just want a fix. So let’s dive into how to recover every single one of your podcast subscriptions from Apple’s walled garden, and migrate them seamlessly into RadioPublic.

1 On your desktop/laptop, open iTunes and navigate to Library > Podcasts. From that screen, go to File > Library > Export Playlist. You should see a window like this:

OPML stands for Outline Processor Markup Language, which doesn’t really explain anything, does it? Never mind – all you need to know is that it’s a file format that helps your podcast apps communicate nicely with each other.

Be sure to set the Format to “OPML.” Then save the file.

2 Next, open your email and send the file to yourself as an email attachment.

3 Switch to your phone (where your RadioPublic app lives), and open the email you just sent yourself.

4 Tap on the attachment to open it, then tap the “share” icon and scroll until you see the RadioPublic icon.

5 Tap the RadioPublic icon and it should initiate an import sequence where you can check/uncheck any shows to import or ignore them.

Aaaaaand you’re done! All your shows, now in RadioPublic. Rock on.

“But why couldn’t I just import them all in the first place?”

Oh hey, did you want to know why the import function inside RadioPublic didn’t pull in all of your shows the first time around? It’s because the only information we’re able to access that way is a list of podcasts that currently have episodes downloaded on your device. And that, of course, might not include every podcast you subscribe to, for a variety of reasons.

So if you want to preserve all of your subscriptions, this is the way to go. (And now you can jump back to the intro, if you like.)
