One Week until the home opener

The Portland Sea Dogs were postponed on Friday night at Binghamton, but in one week, the 25th season of baseball in Portland, Maine begins. Ironically, the ‘Dogs will take on Tim Tebow and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

With seven days until first pitch in Maine, I get to my final most significant moment at Hadlock Field. I think it’s an obvious one — the 2006 Eastern League Championship series. That whole year was unreal. Portland had a 10-game winning and losing streak. What are the odds of that? When Chris Durbin got the final out, the celebration started.

Devern Hansack, who earned the win in the ’06 clincher, was called up to Boston right after the game. Theo Epstein was in attendance for the game and pulled Hansack out of the celebration room to tell him the news. I remember Hitting Coach Russ Morman bringing the late Dan Burke into the celebration room. The best part of that team? I’ll never forget that moment. To this day, we still talk about the Sea Dogs winning the championship. It’s a feeling that every employee in sports should go through.
