Crystal Canyon describe themselves as shoegaze. A quick google tells you shoegaze was initially known as “dream pop” — bingo! Their newest single, Boomerang, is a dream, and luckily no one requires pinching because this is life now and I’m all ears. The track opens up warm, inviting, and delightfully misleading. It’s but a few seconds before they rip off their bandaid of deception and take you on a ride with enormous soundscapes accompanied by the indistinguishably soft airy vocals of Lynda Mandolyn. I am reminded of Pixies, and I’m not mad about it. Close your eyes and roll with it, because every effect-drenched guitar strum and every delicate breath is purely priming you for a chorus no words could ever prepare you for. This chorus is absolute money. All of the layers. All of the chills. Beautiful may be close, but it hardly describes what all this magic leads up to before they say goodbye. I’m floored to learn that this is even close to a 3-minute song. It feels but just a moment. Crystal Canyon know precisely what they’re doing. One of the best teases I’ve probably ever heard. If this doesn’t make you want to see them live, I don’t know what will.
