Clearing the Air

Hey there!

You may (or may not) have noticed that we’ve started to take a different approach to how we announce news and talk about Rainway. We’ve begun to completely hone our focus on what we are working on right now, instead of focusing on our broader plans for the future. This is to eliminate any confusion or frustration, on your part and ours. As part of this new approach, we’ve decided to delete the “First Look” Rainway trailer that we shared with you on January 10, 2018. Honestly, we probably could have removed the video quietly, and no one would have noticed, but in our opinion that’s shady. If we wouldn’t trust something like that (and we wouldn’t), then we certainly can’t expect you to.

These are the facts:

  • The first look trailer highlighted the power, potential, and capabilities of Rainway and our vision for the future, of both Rainway and gaming as a whole.
  • That trailer did not exclusively show Rainway features that are currently available.

However, it has become clear that people look at this video and expect all features shown to be available to them now. The description (which you can see here) on the video read “We’re happy to share with you today our vision for the future of PC and mobile gaming. With Rainway we hope to usher in right device agnostic gaming using our low latency streaming technology.” and “Rainway launches its open beta on January 20th for the web platform, enabling instant access to video games right inside your web browser.”

While we thought this clarified that we were showcasing our vision, what we hope to do, and that we were merely entering beta, we could have — and should have — been much more evident in the video description and all discussion of the video exactly what the beta would look include. We dropped the ball; there is no other way to describe it.

You may notice some periods of quiet (not silence, never silence) from us related to upcoming projects. This is because we’ll only be discussing what we are working on right now. This doesn’t mean there aren’t other projects we’re currently working on outside of what we consider, it just says that they aren’t far enough along for us to go in-depth on them. There’s nothing worse than announcing something and then making people wait for months to get their hands on it.

It’s important to remember that Rainway is currently in beta — we have not fully launched, but instead, are taking a staggered approach to the features, and platforms, on which Rainway is available. This is to ensure that each piece of the puzzle is working to our unwaveringly high standards when we launch, and the most efficient way for us to do so is to master each platform individually. Right now, our focus is on leaving beta and launching later this year. We will, of course, continue to update you of all significant milestones, updates, and developments. We will also continue to set the bar higher, for ourselves and for the community that supports us.
